FOOD PANTRY

Thank You for your Donations!

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry of
St. Dominic Savio Parish says

THANK YOU

for your generous
donations of food items and
checks. Everything which is
donated goes to provide healthy
food for the 100-130 families served by the
Pantry each week.
We are still in need of non- perishable food items
to serve an increasing demand. Canned
vegetables, tuna, boxed cereal, and the like are
especially needed at this time, but any non
perishable food item is sincerely appreciated.
Checks can be made out to St. Vincent de Paul
Pantry and will be used to supplement items as
needed.
Please do not forget us in the summer months, as
the need never diminishes.
God bless you for your generosity.
Thank you and God bless you!s

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 27th

Matthew 13: 44 - 52

Theme: "A Treasure Buried "

Reflect on what you consider your treasure.

Gospel Reflection

Matthew's gospel stacks one parable of the Kingdom on another. He wants Christians to understand that seeking, working, and praying for the Kingdom of God is the heart of Jesus' Good News. When we seek the Kingdom before all else, we are like a merchant who sells everything to buy a pearl of great price. Like Jesus, we value God's love and God's will above any earthly treasure.

Discussion Points for Gospel

How will the parables in today's readings help you to seek God's Kingdom?

Mateo 13: 44 - 52

Salesian Sisters Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Dahimin Mary_HC

The official title of the Congregation is Daughters of Mary Help of Christians,
in Italian:   Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice,  from which the official initials F.M.A. derive and apply to all the Salesian Sisters working throughout the world

MHC

The Community of Salesian Sisters was founded by St. John Bosco, in collaboration with St. Mary Mazzarello, on August 5, 1872 in Mornese, Alessandria, Italy.  In 1908, the first Salesian Sisters arrived in the U.S.A. and settled in New Jersey. From there, Salesian youth and outreach programs spread to Canada and throughout New England, as well as other parts of the country including Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and California. In time, the one Province was divided into three: Canada, Eastern U.S.A. and Western U.S.A.

Answering God’s call to serve the poor and educate youth in
the spirit of St. John Bosco and

St. Mary Mazzarello

This year 2008 we Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA)
Salesian Sisters, celebrate a hundred years anniversary since the
arrival of the first Salesian Sisters in the USA. The beautiful picture of
Mary Help of Christians on the banner outside the church is the
centennial picture chosen with a particular thought in mind. Our
Blessed Mother protects the child who rests in her arms listening to
her heart’s beat. Mary holds the scepter in her right hand assuring
the child that with her there is nothing to fear. The child is not the
picture of the traditional Baby Jesus, but any child, anyone who trusts
in Mary is that “child” in Mary’s arm.

A hundred years of service to youth in the USA, is like a stream of
refreshing water of love.

But how did all begin?

In a small remote village called Mornese, some distance from
Turin, Italy, in 1872 Mary Mazzarello and a small group of
young ladies made their vows to God in the hands of Don
Bosco our founder. The little seed, by the grace of God, grew
and gradually began to spread in other territories with new
foundations.
“By 1877, Mother Mazzarello and Don Bosco could send
the first of many missionary expeditions halfway round the
world. Before her death, May 14 1881, Mother Mazzarello
would send two more expeditions, claiming twenty-six Sisters
as her “missionary Daughters”. Her successor, Mother
Catherine Daghero, would organize some thirty- seven
expeditions, with a total of six hundred forty-five sisters.
In 1908 four of them set foot on Ellis Island, N.Y. They carried
only a few poor satchels, but they brought all that was needed
to build “Mornese” in America.”
(From the 75th Anniversary Memory Book)
July 16th, 2008, feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel marked the beginning of a new project of grace: The first four Salesian Sisters: Srs.Angelina Andorno, Antoinette Agliardi, Frances Delfino and Veneranda Zummit. arrived in Paterson New Jersey at St. Michael Parish. The sacrifices inherent to all beginnings did not discourage the sisters, they were too busy working with the children and adults and getting ready to open the school in September. Kneeling in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the first little chapel the sisters drew courage for
their daily life of sacrifice and work. The light of Christ shining through them drew other
generous vocations to their rank and the miracle of the seed growing and expending that once happened at Mornese happened also in the USA.
We Salesian Sisters thank God and thanks all: members of the Salesian Family, especially our Salesian brothers, parents, friends and benefactors, collaborators and students, who have shared in the mission of these hundred years.

Prayer To Our Lady,

Help Of Christians

Most Holy Virgin Mary, Help of Christian,
how sweet it is to come to your feet
imploring your perpetual help.
If earthly mothers cease not to remember their children,
how can you, the most loving of all mothers forget me?
Grant then to me, I implore you,
your perpetual help in all my necessities,
in every sorrow, and especially in all my temptations.
I ask for your unceasing help for all who are now suffering.
Help the weak, cure the sick, convert sinners.
Grant through your intercessions many vocations to the religious life.
Obtain for us, O Mary, Help of Christians,
that having invoked you on earth we may love and eternally thank you in heaven.

By St. John Bosco

SYLC 2008

With Hearts on Fire,

Act with Justice,

Teach love,

Speak Love,

Be love!

SYLC_hWhat is your mission in Life? Eight teenagers were asked this very same question at a weeklong retreat known as SYLC, Salesian Youth Leadership Conference.
At first, these teenagers didn’t know the answer this question, but through their experience at SYLC, they all left with a sense of what their mission is in life. Jonathon Lara, one of the SYLC participants
said, “SYLC made me find myself and it made me hear and see what talents I have in order to change the world.” Richard Delgado, another SYLC participant,
affirmed “SYLC is not only a place where people become leaders but also a place where leaders become people.” The days at SYLC were filled with various activities including classes on communications skills, leadership skills, community building, social justice awareness and especially strengthening spirituality. “SYLC rekindled not only my connection with God but also my desire to serve the less privileged. It made me realize that it is our (the church community) responsibility to help those who are less fortunate, those who are suffering and those who have wandered from God’s path” stated Brenda Gonzalez.SYLC_j
In an interview, Robert Alvarez, another SYLC participant, added “At SYLC we discovered a new family, a family with
a shared passion, vision, and belief. Within our new family, we discovered ourselves and what we can do. We all left that
week with a new, simple goal that had incredible meaning: to change the world. In the words of Kyle Salinero, ‘I’m not
done preparing, but I am done waiting.’” All the teenagers were present with various social justice issues occurring in
world such as poverty, abuse of human rights, and exploitation of children, and were asked, “What are You going to do about this?” The eight SYLC participants have already started answering this last question.
As Gabriela Lugo said, “We can all make this world a better place by just putting
our talents to use. Even a smile can brighten up someone’s day.”

And now I invite

YOU,

to join us in our call to mission.

SYLC 2008

Con Corazones Ardientes, Actua con "Justicia!" Habla Amor, Y Se Amor!..
